It’s C-c-c-cold
The whole point of this trip was to get to warmer weather. That has not worked out for us this trip. We have been asked by several people about how the storms are affecting us. The answer is that we have had to make adjustments.
Towards the end of our New Orleans segment, there was a nasty rainstorm. Luckily we had breaks in the storm, including during the parade. Sunday started with Amy and Ari getting beignets at Cafe Beignet, a place recommended by our walking tour guide for the French Quarter. He was right; they are better than Cafe Du Monde. Amy and Ari managed to return to the hotel just before the rain started up again. It was incredibly windy and rainy. Greg went for his run and fixed up the trailer to get ready to go. He then picked Amy up and Ari wandered around New Orleans until his flight home.
We left New Orleans on Sunday in the middle of the storm. The original plan was to go to a Florida state park on the Gulf, but a high of 40 degrees does not sound like a good beach day - unless it’s Celsius. So we cancelled our reservation and decided to try to find a warmer location.
We drove through Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to get to Florida. As we drove, the rain went away but the cold from the storm remained. We did manage to stop at two Buc-ee's to use the Tesla superchargers. We drove further than we had planned, trying to get away from the cold.
We drove to a small town on a lake just beyond Pensacola. The campground was lovely with lake access. They even had kayaks that we could have borrowed. Unfortunately, it was pouring rain when we arrived. Greg‘s clothes got completely soaked from setting up camp. We couldn’t enjoy the location, all we could do was climb under the covers to stay warm. Overnight the rain stopped but it reached down to 32 degrees. (Fahrenheit, if that wasn't obvious!).
Monday we hit the road early trying to find a warmer place. It’s too far to get to Tampa or Orlando - at least with our sanity intact. Instead we drove to St. Augustine. We visited St. Augustine about a year ago on our way to pick up the EKKO after the upfitting. It is only supposed to get down to freezing for the next couple of nights.
We got to the campground and were given confusing directions to our campsite, which made parking difficult. Our neighbor was very annoyed by us, fearing that we would crash into his new car. We apologized and gave him a Buc-ee's Overbite (chocolate covered peanut butter candy, in the shape of Buc-ee). All is well, as long as we can stay warm.
