Getting old?
The plan was to spend the weekend with Amy’s family and then head to Tucson for a couple of days. Unfortunately, the weather is not cooperating with us. Oh, the weather in Arizona has been lovely; the issue is the future weather. It is supposed to get below freezing in New Mexico/Western Texas next weekend. Our trailer is very comfortable, but it is not a four season trailer. We don’t want to risk the pipes freezing and causing damage. So we are changing our plans and taking this section faster than we like.
We spent Sunday with Amy’s family and had a nice brunch at Eggstasy, one of her mom’s favorite restaurants. After brunch, Amy took her mom on some errands while Greg met his friend Adam for a hike on the Lost Dog Wash Trail in Scottsdale. Although Adam is a few years older than Greg, his desert hiking skills nearly left Greg behind in the dust. Afterwards, Adam dropped Greg off at the campground and got a quick tour of the RV.
Monday, we hit the road. We only stopped in Tucson for long enough to charge the car. Then we pushed forward to New Mexico. The scenery looks straight out of a Road Runner cartoon. No anvil sightings though. We drove past a lot of billboards for roadside attractions and shops that have probably been around since the 1950s. We passed the Continental Divide. It was a bit odd to pass the Continental divide and not be in the mountains.
Finally we ended up in the town of Demming, NM. This is not a destination, just a waypoint. Demming used to be Camp Cody, a base during WWI. Once the troops left in 1918, the town turned into a Sanitorium. We know this because it is documented at our campground.
Our campground is something new for us: it is a Senior campground. The limit is 55+ so we qualify. Apparently we have reached a certain age where we are allowed in such facilities. Sigh. What is not new is that this campground is close to both the freeway and train tracks. We're in for another noisy night.
