Ups and downs
A selfie with Amy and her father on our way to Mexico

This morning started with a gorgeous sunrise along the water. Although Greg prefers not to run on the beach, the views were worthwhile.

No sooner did Greg return than we got the news we anticipated for the last few days: Amy's father passed away this morning. He was 88 years old; his health was excellent until a year ago, with a sharp decline in the last two weeks. At least we got to spend time together on our way to Mexico.

The rest of the day has been a bit of a blur. It was not possible to get a flight for Amy until tomorrow, so we joined the caravan for the scheduled tour of the town of Mulege. The tour started at the mission, then we walked across the dam on the river. The river banks have lush vegetation, in sharp contrast to the surrounding desert.

Next, we walked to the museum, located at the old jail. The jail had two sets of cells: the inner cells were behind a gate, and the outer cells had no gate! The prisoners in the outer cells left the jail during the day to do manual labor like farming and laundry.

Two prisoners who need to be kept in the inner cells behind the gates!

We walked down the hill to the plaza, where we had a traditional Mexican lunch in town. We spent the rest of the afternoon taking phone calls and making funeral travel arrangements for Amy and our son Ari; Greg plans to stay in Mexico since there is no good way to leave the RV behind.
