The Bear Whisperer

The Bear Whisperer
One of several bridges at Cottonwood Island Park

Today we are heading North and East towards Dawson Creek.

First we had to backtrack for the hour to get back to the highway from Barkerville. Along that road Amy spotted three black bears. Greg called her the bear whisperer. Our vehicle is loud and does not slow quickly, so we were unable to get photos before the bears ran away. However, per Ann’s suggestion, we are going to start a bear count at the end of our posts. At least until we get bored with it.

Once we got back to the highway, we passed through Prince George, probably the biggest town we will see until we get to Juneau. Prince George is at the confluence of two rivers, the Fraser, which we have been following for a few days now and the Nechako. We stopped at Cottonwood Island Park which has a nice trail where the two rivers meet. The path had some interesting little carvings in a few of the trees. It is right next to a railroad museum since the big industry here is the railroad carrying lumber to other places.

After fueling up, we continued to the town of Mackenzie. They have a municipal campground which is oddly enough free for visitors for two nights. If you are a local and actually pay taxes you have to pay.

Campsite is lovely but the mosquitos are rampant. Unfortunately mosquitos will be more common as we continue on this trip.
