North or South?

North or South?
Bridge just outside of Vancouver

Before we left, Amy explained to someone that we were leaving on a trip. Amy hadn’t shared our final destination of Alaska when she was asked what was our first stop. Amy replied Vancouver. The other person asked if we were heading North or South. That was a very reasonable question for someone in Seattle: Vancouver WA is South, just North of Portland. So, yes, we headed North to BC.

Less than a 5 minute wait is unheard of at the Peace Arch crossing

The border crossing was uneventful. There was no one ahead of us at the border. Once we crossed the border, we had a short stop for a watercraft inspection. The Canadians asked to see our kayaks. We opened up the gear garage and showed them our kayaks. The inspector had never seen a foldable kayak before. The stop was quick since the kayaks were dry and had been on the Columbia River, which has a low risk of contamination. We then headed to our campsite in Burnaby, just outside of Vancouver. In accordance with international RV law, the campsite is next to train tracks.

Riding the False Creek ferry to Granville Island
Grilled cheese sandwich for lunch. Last time Amy ordered this, a seagull stole her sandwich. This time she was very protective.
The fruit iced tea is amazing

Today’s task was obtaining groceries since Vancouver is the largest city on the trip. Instead of driving the motorhome around congested Vancouver, we took the light rail to the water taxi to Granville Island. There we had a lot of fun shopping. Granville Island used to be a ship building area. When it closed, they turned the building into a food market. It is a must-stop destination for us in Vancouver. We went all over the market and bought bread, pasta, meat, tea and of course a few Nanaimo bars. Our fridge is full of food that we couldn’t carry across the border. We will be eating well this week!

Then for dinner we had a special stop. A long time ago, a family friend had recommended Kirin restaurant as the best Chinese in Vancouver. We ate there before and knew that his recommendation was spot on. This time we tried a new location. It was amazing.

Neighbor (neighbour?) table ordered the prawns; he was exuberant about his meal

Tomorrow we head to Cache Creek BC. Remember to follow our live map at https://travel.glockners.net/current-map.
