La Frontera
Today was a busy travel day. We started in Portrero, CA and ended in Ensenada, Baja California. The border crossing was easy: the border agent checked our papers and did a quick peek into our vehicle. It took a few minutes for all RVs in the caravan to pass through the border, especially the larger RVs near the back. We drove slowly through Tecate as we waited for the entire group; a police officer asked the wagon master why we were moving so slowly, and the officer escorted us through the town. Hard to imagine that happening in the USA!

Once we left Tecate, we followed Highway 3 through the wine country. It was a beautiful drive, though sometimes challenging due to the size of the caravan and the road conditions. Some rules of the road in Mexico are quite different than in the USA. For example, if you want vehicles to pass, you drive partially on the right shoulder and use your left blinker to signal that other vehicles may pass you on the left.

Driving through Ensenada was challenging due to the traffic. So many ALTO (stop) signs. Ensenada isn’t far from the California border, but it took us almost 5 hours to reach Las Cañadas, our camping resort, located just south of Ensenada. We were a little sad not to be staying near the ocean, but this is a gorgeous new campground. However, it’s so new that many of the facilities are still under construction like the wave pool and the water slide. The water slide is built into the hillside and looks like it will be a lot of fun when it’s complete.
We finished the day with a meeting of the tour participants. They have planned two full days for us around Ensenada. More about that in the next updates!
