Hanukkah in Santa Monica

Hanukkah in Santa Monica

No blog yesterday - not much to say about a 410-mile drive through the Central Valley that left us exhausted and cranky. At least 2 of the 3 Tesla Superchargers had pull-through sites where we didn't have to unhitch.

Today started with Ari taking his first surfing lesson. While Ari was learning to surf, Amy and Greg went to the Santa Monica farmer's market. It's a treat to get fresh produce in the winter. However, we were a bit disappointed that the oranges didn't look great; perhaps it's early in the season.

In the afternoon, Ari asked to see Beverly Hills. We started with a walk on Rodeo Drive, which was packed with tourists. Most boutiques had a security guard to keep out riff-raff like us, and a few had a queue so that you could wait for the chance to spend money! We left the crowds and happened upon a Ladurée store, where we enjoyed authentic Parisian macarons. Next, we went from the shopping of the rich-and-famous to the homes of the rich-and-famous on the hills above downtown Beverly Hills. Some had elaborate fences and gates, which we assumed give some privacy to a celebrity. One had a particularly tall and thick hedge, with tiny clearings for an imposing gate barely larger than a large car. It made us wonder whether some famous celebrities completely avoid public appearances and get assistants to do tasks like bring clothes to try on.

Continuing the tourist theme, we walked on the Santa Monica Pier. At a cost of $20 per person, we passed on the idea of riding the small roller coaster. But someone must be paying, considering the crowds and long lines.

We finished the day with one more celebrity: dinner at Bludso's BBQ, the restaurant run by celebrity barbecue chef Kevin Bludso. This continued Greg's post-retirement BBQ tour. Kevin Bludso may have grown up in LA, but his Texas roots are evident: the brisket was perhaps the best we've ever had. The Mac-and-cheese and baked beans were also excellent.
