Eureka!
Given Ari’s fondness for sand dunes, we decided to visit Eureka Dunes, the highest sand dunes in California. The dunes are impressive but not frequently visited since it’s very challenging to get there. The road to Eureka Dunes is 45 miles of rough gravel, with high-clearance 4x4 vehicles recommended, so we rented a Jeep for the day. It was a 2.5 hour drive to get there, so we left as soon as we could rent the jeep. The drive was picturesque with lots of turns and great views of the Panamint Mountains. Despite the rough road, the drive was a highlight of the day.
We were taking bets as to how many other vehicles would be at the dunes when we arrived. Ari won, with the bet of zero! If we had specified how many would be there after we arrived, Greg’s five would have been correct. There was a small campground at the base of the dunes - a possible future trip with the adventure RV, R2V2?
We all climbed the first steep dune. Amy struggled and did not proceed farther. Ari ran ahead and summited the largest dune twice! The second time, he brought Greg along. After some tough climbs (two for Ari, if you’re counting), it was time for the return 2.5 hour drive. That seemed longer than the drive out.
Tomorrow, we leave Death Valley. Make sure to follow us on the live map: https://travel.glockners.net/current-map.
