El día de vino

El día de vino

Today we toured the wine region of Baja California. We visited two wineries as well as some shops for other foods grown in the region. Our first stop was Cetto vineyards. We got a tour of the wine making process followed by a tasting. We figured out that there was a barrel in the tasting room to dump wine that you didn’t want to finish, which made us popular among a few of our fellow travelers.

We then went to a shop that sold olive oil, jams, hot sauces and bread. We really enjoyed the samples, though we probably ate too much of them. That might have been a mistake. We bought some infused olive oil and a couple of hot sauces. I am sure those will come in handy for later in the trip. Then we took a super quick stop at La Tienda de Queso (literally, The Cheese Shop). Amy ran in and bought 300 grams of a spicy cheese that we had sampled at the vineyard. That should also be handy for later this trip.

Next we stopped for lunch at Los Lomas, a fancy resort. The area reminded us a lot of California.

The lunch menu was "very Amy and Greg": a beet salad, a crudo on a tostada and main course of fish. If we weren’t stuffed enough, there was a cheesecake for dessert served in a wine glass. We rolled out of there.

Fish of the day. Waiter said it was Halibut, but we have no idea. It doesn’t look like Halibut to a couple from the Pacific Northwest!

As if that wasn’t enough, there was one more wine tasting stop. The wine tasting took place in a vault below the shop. The vault was built by the original owner, who owned both the winery and the first bank in Ensenada. It has been turned into a sort of speakeasy. We called them out on that, because Mexico never had prohibition, and they told us that it was retrofitted to give the feel of a speakeasy for special events.

We got back to the campground just as the sun was setting. Tomorrow, we drive to our next location, so we spent the evening packing up our campsite.
