Dock to Table

Dock to Table

We drove from Savannah to Charleston, SC today. It’s the northernmost point on this trip (* on the east coast!). We are staying at James Island County Park. The park is absolutely lovely with a huge lake, a water park, and a challenge course. There is a warning not to throw rocks into the lake because alligators think that motion is food. So, yeah, alligators too.

Along the drive, we saw billboards for canned boiled peanuts. Eww. Then we saw billboards for fresh boiled peanuts at a place called Wood Bros. Amy had never tried them, and Greg had terrible memories of them. We had to try boiled peanuts for completeness. They weren’t as bad as Greg remembered. However, if we want boiled legumes, we’d rather have edamame, and if we want peanuts, we’d rather have roasted ones.

After we settled into our campsite, we decided to try a restaurant that Greg found called Chubby Fish. They describe themselves as a Dock to Table restaurant. It was listed in the Michelin Guide, though no stars. They don’t take reservations, so we could get in if we wanted to wait for a table. They open at 5, but the line starts at 4, per their website. We showed up at 4 and there was already a long line. We waited the hour and, despite Amy’s pessimism, we got a table at the first seating. We were, however, the second to the last party to get a table immediately; everyone else had to get on the waitlist.

The food was worth the wait. Probably the second best restaurant meal we have had on this trip, after Brennan’s brunch in New Orleans. They bring the food out as the chef finishes them, so they recommend sharing dishes. The best dish was the bluefin tuna crudo. The most innovative dish was the Not Fried Chicken Ice Cream. It really looks like fried chicken! The texture of the outside was like fried chicken. Inside was a pretzel to represent the bone. But it definitely tasted like ice cream. This restaurant was definitely worth the wait in line!
