A charming town

A charming town
Along the waterfront

On our previous days in Loreto, all we saw was the airport, gas station, bank and grocery stores. Today, we finally got to see Loreto.

First, Greg ran along the waterfront and was treated to a beautiful sunrise.

Next, the group walked to meet our tour guide, Linda. We met at the same waterfront where Greg went running. Linda was a great storyteller, explaining the history of Loreto, how it was built with wood from the local cactus, and the early settlers. Unlike La Paz or Cabo, she said that Loreto is a quiet town that focuses on preserving the nature around the sea. That suits us well!

We turned from the waterfront towards the town square, seeing some of the art and architecture. Then, we toured the Mission and its museum. We were excited to learn that the Loreto Mission was the first Spanish mission in the Californias. We saw a street marker for El Camino Real, the "Royal Road" that links the Spanish missions from Loreto to Sonoma, California.

When the tour finished, Linda suggested a nearby restaurant called El Rey del Taco, literally the Taco King! Obviously we had to go there for lunch, where we finally got our first official fish tacos of the trip.

Long live the Taco King!

Tomorrow, we make the long drive south to La Paz.
